There’s an App for That!
Here’s a list of my favourite apps for use in band and music situations:
Tuner
Cleartune – Chromatic Tuner (BitCount; $3.99) This is an excellent tuner available for IPhone/IPod combining excellent response, good features and ease of use. Many of the others simply don’t work with band instruments. For a free choice, try Pano Tuner (Jung-Gun Lim, Free or $1.99). For more powerful options, TonalEnergy Chromatic Tuner & Metronome (Sonosaurus LLC, $3.99) provides drone pitches, chords, metronome, and spectrum analysis.
Metronome
There are lots of free and powerful metronomes available. Try Metronome: Tempo Lite (Frozen Ape Pte, LLC, Free). or SilverDial Metronome (Foxhill Software, Free).
Fingering Charts
FingeringCharts Pro (Scott Rundell, $2.99) This App contains fingerings for all the instruments of the concert band. Many instruments also have a dedicated fingering app (usually $0.99) but I haven’t evaluated them.
Rhythm Reading
Rhythm Sight Reading Trainer (Rolfs Apps, $2.99) There’s no better app to work on your rhythm skills. Tap the displayed rhythm in time to the metronome to advance. Features all the time signatures you’ll encounter in band. Send your progress report to Mr. Brehaut for bonus points!
Theory & Note Reading
Note Works Free (Azati, Free) is a great help when learning to read music. Sight Reading Machine (Foak Productions, $1.99) creates instant sight reading exercises for any band instrument.
Ear Training
Relative Pitch (Easy Ear Training, Free or $6.99) This ear training app takes you through the different intervals required for developing good relative pitch. You can try the first five levels for free with Relative Pitch Lite.
Musical Terms
Music Dictionary 101 (VirtualTek, $0.99) or Music Dictionary (Hurryforward Ltd., $1.99). Music Dictionary 101 lists over 270 of the most common definitions. Hurryforward’s Music Dictionary contains over 4000 definitions in the four languages most commonly used in music notation: Italian, German, Latin and English.
Practicing
Practice Center (Gil Estes, $1.99) provides you with all the tools you might need during a practice session (record audio/video, metronome with practice and drum beat mode, tuning drone, timer).
